Two Bikes Mechanical Instructor

Two Bikes is seeking a full-time mechanical instructor to assume full responsibility for the implementation of the mechanical department of The Bike School, our youth workforce development program. The ideal candidate will be both an experienced bike mechanic and have strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work with underserved youth. This full-time position has a compensation range of $32,000-$38,000, depending on experience. This job requires working on Saturdays and offers a consistent schedule week-to-week. Two Bikes is a nonprofit bike shop and community center located in the Historic Old City of Knoxville, Tennessee. Two Bikes strives to expand access to the personal, social, and environmental benefits of riding a bike. Knoxville has a rich history of bicycling that has gained a national spotlight in recent years, and Two Bikes was established to ensure that all citizens of Knoxville have access to the amazing cycling opportunities in the area.

Job Responsibilities

Run the mechanical department of The Bike School (50%)

  • Direct the development, execution, and evaluation of the mechanical department of the bike school.

  • Provide instruction to underserved youth on the repair and maintenance of recycled bicycles (typically 10-40 years old).

  • Ensure that each bike is properly cleaned, repaired, and processed in The Bike School system.

  • Maintain paperwork for each bicycle including parts used, tasks completed, and who reviewed the completed bike.

  • Direct the vision and implementation of program growth.

  • Maintain accurate records of all parts and accessories used in The Bike Schooland accurately adjust inventory in Lightspeed POS software.

Offering and demonstrating excellent customer Service (15%)

  •  The mechanic instructor position is public facing. It is expected that the candidate will provide industry leading customer service including creating and maintaining an atmosphere where each community member can feel welcome and comfortable.

Develop and maintain curriculum (10%)

  • Direct the development, execution, and evaluation of The Bike School mechanicalcurriculum.

  • Maintain accurate records of youth staff members including their progressthrough the curriculum.

Queue and prepare bikes for The Bike School (10%)

  • Select multiple bikes for each youth staff member to refurbish during their

internship. The Mechanical Instructor will be responsible for preparing the bikes for each curriculum topic. For example, the instructor might rebuild or adjust the hubs on each bike, so they can instruct a lesson on wheel truing. Youth staff members will refurbish bikes in multiples (three bikes at a time) so they can learn, practice, and master a skill before moving on to the next curriculum topic.

Fundraising (5%)

  • Work with the Development Director to use data from The Bike School togenerate fundraising opportunities.

  • Capture video and photography that reflects the work of The Bike School

Organizational Planning (5%)

  • Participates in staff, team, program, and board meetings. 

  • Participates in annual planning efforts, including strategic and operational planning and budgeting. Seeks out and participates in professional development and training opportunities.

Build bikes for the Pedal It Forward Program (5%)

  • When all other tasks are complete the mechanic instructor will be responsible for refurbishing bikes for the Pedal It Forward program.

Job Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience as a bike mechanic.

  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work with and teach underserved youth.

  • The ability to provide industry-leading customer service.

  • Strong project management skills including the management of complex, multifaceted programs and systems resulting in measurable success and program growth.

  • Fluency with Microsoft Office including Excel.

  • A passion for the Two Bikes mission, vision, and values.

  • Commitment to environmental stewardship, social justice, and equitable transportation

  • Strong self-motivation including the ability to work independently.

Job Prefrences

  • A knowledge of and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Experience as a leader in the bike shop (head mechanic, etc).

  • Experience working with underserved youth.

  • Experience with Lightspeed point of sale software.

  • Experience in the nonprofit industry.

  • Experience with photography, video editing, and social media all help.

Job Compensation

  • $32,000 to $38,000 DOE; this position is not eligible for overtime pay. All full-time positions are accompanied by benefits including:

    • Medical, dental, vision insurance, and life insurance

    • 10 days of vacation plus a holiday recess from 12/24 through 1/2.

    • 5 additional personal days

    • 10 days of sick leave per year
